It's A Sign: When To Add Consigned Items Into Your Wardrobe

When I'm helping a client build a foundational wardrobe—one filled with versatile, hardworking pieces that anchor their style—I don’t typically start with consignment stores. That's because foundational pieces need to be reliable, easy to mix and match and available in specific sizes and colors. These wardrobe staples, the building blocks that you’ll wear day in and day out, can be trickier to find secondhand.

But once those essentials are in place, consignment shopping becomes a goldmine. These stores are like the sprinkles on top of your wardrobe cake. They’re fantastic for uncovering bold, unique statement pieces—the kind that add personality and flair to an otherwise simple outfit. Think embroidered jackets, vintage handbags, or unexpected textures that turn basics into something memorable.

Consignment pricing is another bonus—it makes it easier to experiment without the fear of buyer’s remorse. You can take a chance on that electric blue blazer or sequined clutch and see where it fits into your style puzzle. Some of my most unforgettable finds have come from sifting through these treasure troves. It’s the perfect way to add a little extra sparkle to your wardrobe without overshadowing the foundational pieces that hold everything together.

Sign #1: Sweater Vest

A sweater vest is one of those pieces that works its magic without being too obvious. Its sleeveless and fitted design creates a clean, structured look that highlights the waist while still offering plenty of room for layering underneath. The open neckline gives you the freedom to pair it with anything from a crisp button-up to a relaxed tee, striking that perfect balance between tailored and comfortable. It adds dimension to your outfit, creating the illusion of a longer, leaner silhouette—especially when it’s well-fitted and hits just the right spot on your torso.

Now, let’s talk about this particular sweater vest—a vibrant, 80's-inspired hot pink number with a Tetris-esque pattern of spaghetti-thin lines. The design is fun and playful, a nod to the retro, pixelated feel of the 80s, while the striking color makes it a statement piece that stands out. The spaghetti-thin lines are visually interesting and help break up the space in a way that flatters your shape, adding a quirky, retro flair. I’ve neutralized some of the patterns intensity with a pair of pull on black ponte pants and a pair of black booties to anchor the outfit.

Sweater vests have a way of transporting you to moments filled with warmth and nostalgia—think cozy afternoons spent with your grandma or the carefree charm of your first days of school. There’s something inherently comforting about the idea of a well-loved sweater vest, bringing with it a sense of timelessness and subtle elegance. It’s a piece that feels both special and effortlessly chic. And yet, it also taps into the playful spirit of childhood—remember the first time you dressed up in something that made you feel a little grown-up? This sweater vest does the same: it’s nostalgic, stylish, and just a little bit whimsical, making it the perfect blend of comfort, sentiment, and fun.

Kat Depner wearing consigned plaid blazer

Sign #2: The Plaid Blazer

I was probably born in a blazer. As soon as I could say the word, I’ve had an undeniable love for them. Shoulder pads? A built-in hourglass thanks to strategic cinching? Yes, please! So when I laid eyes on this plaid blazer, it was like seeing a long-lost soulmate.

Plaid and blazers are a striking combination because they bring together two seemingly contrasting elements that actually complement each other beautifully.

Blazers are inherently formal, structured pieces. With their sharp lines, tailored fit, and polished finish, blazers are the epitome of sophistication and professionalism. They have a sense of authority and refinement that can elevate any outfit.

On the other hand, plaid is often associated with more casual or rustic settings — think cozy flannel shirts and hiking boots. It’s relaxed, warm, and approachable, often seen as a symbol of comfort and practicality.

But here’s why they work together: Plaid softens the formality of a blazer while still maintaining the structure and elegance the blazer offers. The contrast between the two creates a dynamic, modern look. The formal sharpness of the blazer grounds the casualness of the plaid, while the plaid injects personality and warmth, making the whole ensemble more approachable and less stiff. It’s the perfect balance between structured and relaxed, sophisticated and laid-back. And if that were not enough, the edgy additional of strategic buckles along the waistline creates a natural hourglass and gives the ever so slight hint of goth edge.

The result is a look that’s polished but not overly serious—stylish, yet grounded, and versatile enough to transition from corporate shenanigans to a weekend brunch. This combination works because it challenges expectations, creating a sophisticated but comfortable aesthetic that feels both fresh and timeless.

Kat Depner wearing consigned mesh top

Sign #3: Mesh Top

A mesh top is exactly what it sounds like—sheer, netted fabric that lets light through, creating that see-through effect. It’s lightweight, stretchy, and comes in all kinds of styles, from long sleeves to tanks. Mesh can vary in weave size, giving you control over the coverage. It’s one of those pieces that adds instant edge to any outfit.

As someone whose body temperature runs hot in the dead of winter, finding this light weight ditty hanging in a local consignment shop was a no-brainer.

So, why does mesh work so well?

For starters, versatility is key. Mesh is perfect for layering—it adds dimension without overpowering the rest of your look. You can wear it over a bralette for a laid-back vibe or under a blazer for something polished.

It also creates a striking balance. Mesh has an edgy, rebellious feel, but when paired with structured pieces like a bomber or sleek skirt, it becomes refined rather than over the top. The result is a chic mix of bold and elegant.

Another reason mesh shines is its texture contrast. It pairs beautifully with heavier fabrics like leather or tailored pants, adding depth and intention to your outfit. The combination of delicate mesh with solid fabrics is always a winning look.

To sum it up, mesh tops bring boldness, versatility, and texture into any wardrobe. They’re the perfect way to add a bit of edge while keeping things stylish and balanced.
